Background of Meditation

The Background of Meditation

Welcome to our page exploring the background of meditation. For hundreds of years now, the various forms of meditation have provided an excellent method of relaxation and introspection that have been employed by people from all across the world. But where did meditation come from?

There are dozens of different types of meditation that are presently known, so this page will mostly just take a general overview of the entire process, and how it can benefit you. Certainly, there’s been a lot of writing on meditation’s health benefits, but we can basically condense all those volumes down into the following main benefits:

• Increased relaxation.
• Improved concentration.
• An altered (higher) state of awareness, both of one’s self and one’s environment.
• Lower blood pressure
• Many other medical benefits of meditation
• Improved attitude and management of emotional problems
• Physical benefits of meditation

If you like the sound of these (and who doesn’t) then just keep reading!
Meditation is a phenomenal thing, and we envy those who are being exposed to it for the first time.

the soul and the language of
our spirit” - Jeremy Taylor

Where did Meditation Start?
What is Meditation?

The first thing on your mind is probably wondering exactly what meditation is. To put it simply, meditation is a form of exercise wherein one attempts to focus one’s mind to the point that distractions are diminished altogether. The reasons why one would attempt to do this are many. Just as there are physical benefits to meditation, so too are there spiritual and mental benefits.

Physically speaking, one who practices meditation can expect that they’ll have an increased sense of how to relax and avoid distraction. Clearly, this manifests in a lot of benefits such as lowered blood pressure and a reduced heart beat. In addition, the deep breathing can create in one a greatly expanded lung capacity, as well as improved circulation all round.

Mentally speaking, the rewards are even more obvious. Being able to ignore distraction and focus intently on a single thing is a skill that is bound to come in handy in all aspects of one’s life, from the obvious to the not so obvious. At work, you’ll be able to focus more on your assignments and get them done with a clearer sense of mind. When driving, you’ll be able to pay more attention and have a safer time of it. When relaxing, you’ll be able to thoroughly relax, without being bothered by concerns of other obligations that you’re trying to forget for a moment.

The lazy man's way to meditate. Hundreds of thousands of people in over 172 countries have used Holosync to make dramatic improvements in their lives.

Different techniques on how to Meditate

The techniques of meditation vary remarkably from one discipline to another. It seems that everyone has their own ideas about how meditation should work. For that reason, we provide a lot of dedicated articles on our site covering each individual type of meditation, such as Buddhist Meditation and Transcendental Meditation, in great detail.

However, we recognize that one of the hardest parts of learning to meditate for a beginner is just finding someone who is willing to teach them. So, we thought it would be a good idea to include some generalized advice about how to meditate on this page. Just remember though: there are many different forms of meditation out there. This isn’t “the right way”, it’s just something that we hope will help you get started. Also click here to read the article Different Mediation Techniques Compared.

Get Started Today – One Technique on How to Meditate

First of all, you’ll need to find an area where you can be relaxed and free from distraction. Dress in comfortable clothes, and then go to that area and begin to relax. You’ll want to be comfortable, but also to stay in a posture that will prevent you from falling asleep. Meditation, as peaceful as it seems, is actually a very active thing! Once you’re relaxed, take some deep breaths, and try to focus your attention on a single thing. For beginners, we recommend that this be the sensation of your own breathing, but thousands of different things can be used, such as a sound, or a mantra (you can say one word over and over in your head), or a special riddle known as a koan. It doesn’t matter what you use; when you meditate by focusing your attention on one thing, that thing is called a mantra.

As you focus your attention, you’re likely going to notice that other thoughts try to encroach upon your thinking. You might notice that your mantra reminds you of something in particular, and that your mind will wander to that something. When this happens, let it vanish and then bring your attention back to the mantra in question. It’s not ‘wrong’, but just keep bringing your mind back to the thing you are focusing on. The idea is that you remain intently focused on the present reality right in front of you, rather than allowing your mind to wonder. At all times, however, remember to continue breathing deeply.

There is no such thing as a ‘good’ meditation or a ‘bad’ meditation. It just ‘is’. At first you may not feel comfortable with this process, but do continue; after a few weeks you will learn to relax more and more.

After a period of time, you should notice that the other thoughts stop intruding and that you have attained a state of purely open mindfulness. Most people find that this state brings with it a powerful sense of clarity and relaxation, an energy that is not accompanied by being tense. Those are just some of the many wonderful benefits of meditation.

Is Meditation a Religion?

Some people feel uncomfortable with the idea of meditation because they associate it with religion. If they already happen to subscribe to a religion that doesn’t involve meditation, they might feel as if they’re going against the tenets of their own beliefs. This is an understandable concern, but let’s put the myth to rest right now: meditation is not a religion.

There are indeed hundreds of religions around the world that make use of meditation in their religious practices. However, this is as incidental as the fact that there are hundreds of religions that make use of the color black. It’s just coincidence. Meditation is simply an exercise, and its physical and mental benefits can be enjoyed by anybody, no matter their spiritual orientation.
