NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming

Created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970’s, NLP, or Neuro Linguistic Programming, often called the new technology of achievement, is a model or system of describing and understanding our internal communication with our selves and with other people, based on language/speaking and all our five senses used in communication.
Once we begin to understand how we communicate with our selves and with the world around us, we have more choice in how we behave and choice about the emotional state we are in.

NLP is sometimes equated with hypnosis, but it is far more than that.

An Explanation of NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming

Have you ever been surprised at how a friend or family member reacts so differently to an event or circumstance than you do? It’s the same event – but you see it completely differently.
Have you ‘felt’ an atmosphere in a room, even though no-one has spoken, you certainly ‘get the message’?

• We all see the world from our own perspective – in different ways. In fact we can be ‘stuck in the rut’ of our perspectives. NLP helps to give us choice in our behaviours as we learn to understand what drives our beliefs and how we see the world. It also gives us a greater ability to relate to – or have greater rapport with, others, as we understand what drives their communication.

• NLP teaches how to control our emotional state on a day to day basis – to choose ‘the state’ we are in, so that rather than reacting to a situation or stress for example, we can begin to respond from a position of personal power. Various NLP techniques assist in this process, such as anchoring resourceful emotional states (from our own past experience) or modelling others (replicating other people’s behaviour).

• When we communicate we use more than words. To a greater or lesser degree we pick up cues from others from visual, auditory and kinesthetic (even gustatory and olfactory) messages. With training you can learn to consciously observe others’ verbal and non-verbal communication and to communicate at their ‘level’ or from their ‘modality’, and thus create much greater rapport. It has been said that this is manipulation. But the fact is that we are always trying to manipulate, or persuade others to our point of view are we not?

• We see the world through our own ‘distorted’ perceptions, NLP teaches how to reframe our beliefs and perceptions and set specific goals, and modify our behaviour in ways we want to (rather than our past behaviour of reacting, we can now consciously respond)
