Are you Successful?
What is the Meaning of Success?
This definition of success may surprise you …. ‘Success is what YOU think it is’.
So, are you successful?
Now let’s take a look at this. It is interesting to read some of the Quotes about Success where many well-known writers, speakers and leaders give us their idea of success.
Their ideas are all different. Does this mean that they are all wrong – or are they all right?
Each person has a different definition of success, and you can be successful – if you think you are.
Definition of Success
As we have said, the meaning of success is different things for different people. But no matter who you are, there are common elements in the definition of success for all.
1. Taking Personal Responsibility
First and Foremost your success is up to you. No-one else can do it for you; you need to take 100% responsibility for all the outcomes in your life. Even in the smallest of things, we sometimes moan about ‘she did this to me’, ‘he made me do that’, ‘it’s not fair …..dum de dum de dum’ ‘the government doesn’t …..’ blah, blah, blah. It is our reaction to what we experience, how we handle events in our lives, that is important. Once we really grasp the concept of taking personal responsibility and totally embrace it, we are well on the way to great success. Now we can move forward to what is the meaning of success for ourselves.
2. What is it That You Really Want?
How will you know if you are successful, how will you know you have achieved what you want – unless you are really clear about what you want? You need to decide exactly what you want – in all areas of your life. It’s not just about earning $1 million, owning a Ferrari or Mercedes, a ranch house in the mountains, a villa in Provence or taking holidays in the Maldives, Paris and St Moritz (well, it may be – if those are your specific goals). Success could be losing 15 pounds, planting a new garden, writing a book. You know that specific written goals work; think carefully abut what you really want, write it down, then get to work on your goals – more about this later. 3. Belief
This is an interesting one, and an important component of success. When you believe that your goals are possible, and believe that you truly can have what you want, then you will do the things necessary to make them come about. I know a person who says she wants to be rich (and hasn’t defined what ‘rich’ is), and wants to get there by being a success at her network marketing business. But she never makes any calls, she’s not telling folks about the great products she has; she doesn’t really believe she can do it. Belief is crucial to our personal success. You need to find ways to believe in yourself and to holt ‘self-doubt’ at the door.
4. Handling Fear and Failure
If your goals are big and exciting and challenging, we sometimes feel fear – fear of failure. Most times a big goal involves taking some risk – personally, financially, stepping out to do things you have never done before. Fear can actually be a useful emotion, keeping you alert and careful; however fear can ring the ‘death knoll’ on a goal if it completely stops you in your tracks. 5. Take Action
You can write wonderful goals and plans, you can tell everyone you will be a millionaire, but nothing happens until you take action. A big goal can seem daunting, learn about ‘chunking it down’, learn about planning tomorrow’s task tonight, do the most important things first on a daily basis. When you become focused on your goal, and take even the smallest action every day towards it, your goal can begin to take on a life of its own; success races towards you.
6. Do Whatever it Takes
Time, effort, thinking, practice, work; and all of those again! It’s up to you. We all know when we are really getting on with it, or when we are kidding ourselves. In those famous words: “Just do it”. However sometimes we need help and that is okay; in fact it is very often the smart thing to do to engage the help of a friend, mentor or coach. Sometimes self-doubt creeps in, we are not sure where to go next or we lose momentum. Personal Coaching for business, career, relationships, personal goals and projects can be very useful. Most big businesses say that coaching is imperative these days. An objective mentor or supporter will help you move through barriers, change plans where necessary and help to keep you accountable. 7. Visualize your Success
Use visualization – Visualization is a wonderful tool for achieving personal success. Just take time each day to visualize and feel your success. This will help draw that desire to you. Have you read about the Law of Attraction? Consciously direct your thoughts and let it work for you.
8. Commitment and Perseverance
High achievers as a group are all committed and persistent. It doesn’t matter what comes along they persist / continue/carry on until they reach their goal. It doesn’t matter what star they are reaching for, they practice, practice, practice and then some! This little cartoon is a great reminder.
Don’t wait until you reach your goal, you are successful each step along the way. Seek feedback to focus on both your achievements already, and to make adjustments where needed. Give your self a metaphorical pat on the back – at least once a day. You deserve it.
10. The Success Journey
Life is about growth and change. Your path is probably not going to be smooth. You will encounter lessons to learn and obstacles to get around or through. This is good, because as you are following the steps to success, you are learning, growing and becoming a stronger person. Celebrate that!
11. Gratitude
Successful people are grateful. Have gratitude – Everyday, take time to be thankful for every good thing in your life. In doing so, you are opening yourself to more good things, including your own personal success. Be grateful for the small things, like a good cup of coffee to help you wake up, and be grateful for the big things, like a job promotion. Just remember to be grateful.
