Motivation with Hypnosis

For many, hypnosis has been a useful tool for motivation and achieving goals. While an air of mystery surrounds hypnosis, it’s really a very simple method for helping to program the unconscious mind to help you through periods of lower-than-desired motivation, and on to achieving your goals

How does hypnosis work?

Suggestions are implanted in the unconscious mind and are triggered by harmful thoughts in the conscious mind or by actions taken by the body. The suggestions are the types that under other circumstances, you might dismiss as being impossible or at least question the viability of. Hypnosis is not a magical method of mind control; it only works on those who are open to being hypnotized. Hypnosis can be done by a hypnotherapist or by one’s self, and is done when a person is in a highly relaxed state and open to these suggestions. Self-hypnosis can only be done when you are very relaxed, focused on the suggestions you want to plant in your unconscious mind, and under the condition that you accept the suggestions without questioning them.

How can hypnotism help with motivation?

One of the best uses for hypnosis is motivation. As we all know, strong motivation is the key to achieving goals. By implanting motivational suggestions into the unconscious mind, we can “access” them whenever we feel the need for inspiration and motivation. The suggestion would most likely be triggered to surface in the conscious mind when we begin the negative self-talk that comes with losing motivation, feeling discouraged, or confused about what steps to take next. Hypnotic suggestions, known as auto-suggestions are framed in the form of positive statements such as affirmations or success quotes that are specific and tailor-made for the situation. They may also be images. For example, if you are trying to quit smoking and using hypnosis as a tool, an auto-suggestion that may be implanted in your unconscious mind would be a vision of you, healthy and running a marathon, or doing something else that you probably couldn’t do as a smoker. So when you start to crave a cigarette and visualize yourself putting that cigarette to your mouth, the auto-suggestion plants a different, better vision in your mind. These can be bolstered with affirmations made for your situation such as: I love my healthy new lifestyle! Hypnosis for motivation can be used for anything you need motivation and inspiration for – diet and fitness, stopping a bad habit, study and learning, sports, your career – anything, really.

Do I need a hypnotherapist or can I hypnotize myself?

Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, a hypnotherapist might be needed. If you are on a program that requires follow-up such as a non-smoking or other health program, a hypnotherapist might be required. You can always try self-hypnosis and see if it works for you. Self-hypnosis isn’t hard to learn, although you will get better at it with practice. There are downloadable programs that are very good, as well as CDs you can use for self-hypnosis. When you do this yourself, make certain that the suggestions and affirmations you are using for motivation are completely positive. If you use negatives, your unconscious mind will ignore the whole thing and it will produce nothing. Phrase your suggestions for motivation like this:

By focused studying, I am preparing to pass the exam.
I am focused and ready to complete this project.
I love feeling healthy and fit!
I can see and feel that my job-search is producing great results!
I am energized to complete my thesis.
I have put together a great plan, and am using it every day!

Hypnosis works well for people who want to feel inspired and motivated to reach new goals, it also works well for reinforcing goals, reducing stress, and building confidence. It is not about making you do things, but helping your mind to use your own resources in the best way possible for motivation, inspiration and achievement.
