Motivation in the Work Place

Examples of motivation in a work place, how to create employee motivation and keep it high – and why it is so important.

In the work place, dollars motivate – but not as much as you would think. We all know that motivation in the work place is of primary importance.
In a motivated workplace things get done – and at a consistently high level of quality. This principle is observable across the globe in just about every situation that you could imagine, from the military to the service industry, and the results are always the same: people who feel fulfilled with their jobs consistently give better results.
Is it any wonder that people are constantly searching for new ideas about how to create employee motivation?

We’ve got a few ideas on the topic ourselves that we’d like to share.

“Life is ten percent what happens to
you and ninety percent how you
respond to it”. – Lou Holtz

Why Motivation in the Work Place is Important

It’s simple; a motivated workforce is happier, more productive, has lower absenteeism or ‘sick days’ off, remains with the company longer, is more creative in their work and the workplace is a more enjoyable environment for all.

Regaining Motivation at Work with Fun and Games

Playing games at work is a popular way to regain motivation or to increase motivation in general.
Of course, we’re not talking about just any old games here.
You aren’t likely to increase motivation all that much if your employees are sitting around playing Blackjack all day. Instead, we’re talking about various competitive games that are specifically tailored to increase motivation among employees.
These games are gaining a lot of popularity and are considered to be quite effective by most who employ them.

One employee motivation game is the so called “Cross Selling Game”.
This game essentially involves challenging employees to find new ways to cross sell products and to increase referrals through creative means.
In order to establish a sense of competition, employees are divided into teams that compete against one another. It’s felt that this level of competition provides increased motivation because it encourages employee interaction, as well as a greater challenge.
Of course, a critical aspect of any motivation increasing game is in the reward. Employers who use games like the cross selling game must offer the winning team of employees (or even both teams if a certain target is reached) rewards for their success.
This will provide the compensation, responsibility, and recognition needs that are so important to increasing employee motivation.

Another popular game that’s quite similar to the cross selling game is the "Cost savings game", wherein similar teams are encouraged to find ways to save money. Again, the same structure of competition and reward are used to great effect.

Since team work is such an integral part of each and every game that is typically used to increase motivation, it stands to reason that we should focus on teamwork to get ideas for even more games.
Indeed, the process of brainstorming, informal as it usually is, is a great field upon which games can be played.
By coming up with elaborate ways to make the brainstorming process more fun, you not only engage the employees in a fun and entertaining way, but you also enable them to more confidently work together as a team, which is not only an invaluable skill, but also vitally important when it comes to motivation.

Just as children are shown to learn best in their formative years through the medium of games, employers should never overlook the impact that interactivity can have.
A simple game can present a concept to employees in a way that is memorable and engaging, and that breaks the norm of their workdays. It’s a welcome diversion that meets all of the requirements for increasing motivation, and for that reason, its importance cannot be overstated.
It’s worth trying out a few fun competitions and games for regaining motivation at work.
